Rainbow Foods opened in 1980, upstairs in the Emporium Mall on Shattuck Way. It was a terrible location for a retail food store, but somehow people found us. We were the first store in Juneau to sell organic produce and the first to sell bulk foods. All the shelves in the original store were made of wood, reflecting the aesthetic of the time. Over the years, Rainbow has inhabited 4 different locations, each a little bigger than the one before. While our locations have changed, what has remained the same is our commitment to personal, community, and planetary health. Rainbow offers a mindfully curated selection of organic and natural foods, supplements, and personal care products.
Our kitchen produces an array of baked goods (scones, croissants, cookies, sourdough bread) as well as soup, salads, sandwiches, and a hot entrée for lunch every weekday. We pride ourselves on making our prepared food on the premises using certified organic ingredients.
Rainbow is a family-friendly store. Small shopping carts for kids often get as much use as the large carts. Our children’s play area is a popular destination. Generations of kids have grown up at Rainbow, from riding in a parent’s backpack to checking out customers. We strive to be a place where people of all ages and backgrounds are welcome and are treated with respect and consideration.
